Through the German Countryside

Sunday was a very important day for the locals.  Germany was to play against Argentina in the soccer World Cup finals taking place in Brazil.  At our small hotel,  people were arriving to watch the game on large TV screens, with flags painted on their faces and all manner of patriotic costume.  Germany won and everyone was delighted,  their houses and cars decorated with flags wherever we looked.

The sun came out the next day, too,  as we rode on through the fields with the abundance of sunflowers looking somewhat bedraggled after all the rain,  but no longer confused about where to point their faces!

We erroneously descended to the river at Kaiserstuhl and crossed to the Swiss side. When faced with an even steeper climb to the bike path there, we returned to the German side of the river and enjoyed a long, straight ride on paved paths.   While recovering from the effort,  we looked around the small,  picturesque town.

At Bad Sackingen, the longest covered bridge of many crosses the Rhine. We took our time and enjoyed the ancient beams that supported the overhead structure. Again brown water from the heavy rains.

Looking up river we could see a dam,  one of many,  built to provide Hydroelectric power.
Much turbulence was evident in the water below the bridge.

A farmstand offered the freshest of fruits and vegetables so we tucked a sampling into our bags and rode on to our destination of the day...
